Sudan: News media silenced after two years of war
The Sudan war has disappeared from the news rader. For two years, reporters trying to cover the conflict between Sudan’s regular army and the Rapid Support Forces paramilitary have done so at high risk: at least seven journalists ([link removed]) have been killed, some fifteen media professionals have been detained, and scores of others have been wounded, threatened, cyberattacked and surveilled. The conference on the humanitarian crisis in Sudan — an initiative by the United Kingdom, the European Union, France and Germany that is scheduled to take place in London on the second anniversary of the war — will aim to secure concrete commitments to enable journalism in the conflict zone, namely independent and safe access to the territory, curbing impunity for crimes committed against journalists, and support for Sudanese media in exile

The iconic journalist was thrown behind bars from 24 December 2022 to 1 November 2024 — almost two years — with no legal basis, his right to a fair trial was violated ([link removed]) , and the motive for his detention was discriminatory ([link removed]) as it was linked to his journalism.
** The noose tightens around journalists in Serbia
------------------------------------------------------------
Serbian authorities are still struggling under the weight of the mass protests triggered by the deadly collapse of the Novi Sad train station five months ago. In response, they have tightened their grip ([link removed]) on independent media and outlets that criticise the government and increased their repression ([link removed]) of journalists. Yet, European political leaders remain locked in a state of guilty inaction even though press freedom must be respected for the Balkan nation to join the European Union (EU).
** RSF withdraws from negotiations on European AI Act’s Code of Practice
------------------------------------------------------------
The current version of the Code of Practice for the European Union (EU)’s AI Act does not contain a single concrete provision to combat the proven dangers AI poses to accessing reliable information. Democratic issues cannot be sidelined to an appendix, as they currently are in this text. After six month of participating in negotiations in vain, RSF condemns theabsence of safeguards for the right to information ([link removed]) and the tech industry’s overwhelming influence in the process. The NGO is ending its contribution ([link removed]) to drafting the text and withdrawing from the negotiating table.

** Before my arrest, I promised that the investigations into corruption would continue, even if they arrested us one by one, and that we would keep disappointing [the authorities]. My colleagues have kept that promise. I am very grateful to them. Foreign and Azerbaijani journalists are continuing the investigations. That gives us hope.
