John,
Today marks the end of the Treaty Principles Bill. One of the most divisive, misinformed, and shameful pieces of legislation this country has recently seen.
And it’s thanks to the hundreds of thousands of New Zealanders like you, John, who stood up, spoke out, and would not be silenced.
To the tens of thousands who marched at the hīkoi, the hundreds of volunteers all over the country, parents with their tamariki, kaumātua who raised their flags – thank you.
To whānau who held writing workshops in their marae, churches and community halls, and to everyone who contributed to the more than 300,000 submissions and shared their time and their voice – thank you.
Together, we stood against the divisive, arrogant and weak attempts from this Government to rewrite our history.
Te Tiriti o Waitangi is our founding document. It is a living promise, not a bargaining chip for coalition negotiations. Christopher Luxon and his Government will forever be on the wrong side of history.
As I said in my speech at Waitangi earlier this year, <[link removed]> responsible political leaders light a path forward. They don’t exploit division and fear that comes from the darkness that uncertainty creates.
Coming together does not mean being the same or thinking the same, but it means finding common ground in which we can all move forward together.
We will continue to stand for progress, not division – and I thank you for standing with us.
Nga mihi,
Chris
