Dear John,
I was watching anxiously this afternoon when the Oregon Senate Judiciary Committee finally took up SB 1003, the radical assisted suicide expansion bill, after many delays.
But instead of a clear victory or loss, we saw yet another delay.
Lawmakers voted to move the bill out of the Senate Judiciary Committee “without recommendation” to the Rules Committee for further discussion.
While I’m glad SB 1003 didn’t advance into the broader legislature, I’m disappointed that advancing it remains a possibility this session.
I’m especially saddened that Senator Sara Gelser-Blouin gave a “courtesy yes” vote to move this bill to the Rules Committee, though she affirmed she plans to vote “no” if it later lands on the floor of the legislature.
The reality is, one more “no” vote would have resulted in a tie and could’ve stalled this bill for good. Senator Gelser-Blouin could have been that “no” vote.
I'm grateful that Gelser-Blouin will be voting against SB 1003 if it makes it out of the Rules committee. But every minute this dangerous bill stays in the legislature, we run the risk of an expansion of assisted suicide that could put the lives of our elderly and medically vulnerable community members at risk.
Thank you so much for all the effort you've made to communicate with your representatives about SB 1003 and share your pro-life convictions with them.
My team and I will continue to keep you updated on any movement of this bill in the legislature.
Because everyone deserves an advocate,
