John,
The latest string of tragic events caused by overzealous,
over-the-top police -- the brutal killings of Breonna Taylor and
George Floyd -- have put a microscopic lens on policing and how
we invest in it.
While the Minneapolis Police Department spent millions of dollars
training officers on de-escalation and implicit biases, it didn’t
stop four officers from murdering an unarmed Black man.
This is just the latest incident in a string of heinous police
violence against Black Americans. It’s time we look deeper into
the systemic racism rooted in institutions like the police and
enact meaningful change that will prevent this from ever
happening again.
Racism and violence are deeply
embedded in our nation’s way of policing, which is why it’s time
we divest from police and start meaningfully investing in our
communities. Join Hank in demanding divestments from police now!

In the past few decades, our country has put an even higher
emphasis on policing, and is now spending close to $200 billion
each year on police and incarceration. Meanwhile, chronic
disinvestment in Black communities further widens the racial
wealth and health gap.
In order to end the war being waged against Black people, we must
take a close and careful look at whether our resources are being
distributed to line up with our priorities.
We should not be putting any
additional money toward policing in its current state when there
are underserved Black communities where that money would be a
welcomed, positive investment.
This is the kind of action we
need in order to see change -- join Hank by signing on to demand
police divestments today.
