Chair's Corner
Aloha Republican ʻOhana,
I hope this letter finds you well and encouraged as we continue our important work together for the future of Hawai‘i.
First, I want to extend a heartfelt mahalo to everyone who attended and supported our recent Prince Kūhiō Celebration. The event was a tremendous success. The festive casino night theme brought energy and joy to the room, and the outpouring of unity and fellowship was truly inspiring. It was clear that everyone enjoyed themselves, and the positive feedback has confirmed that we need more events like this to strengthen our community.
Congratulations to all the lucky prize winners! Your enthusiasm lit up the night, and your presence made the event unforgettable. The sense of unity that was shared is something we must continue to cultivate as we move forward together.
On a more urgent note, I must bring your attention to a serious legislative development. On Friday, the Hawaii House passed Senate Bill 401, which would expand the current ban on “assault pistols” to now include certain rifles and shotguns, as well as standard capacity magazines. Even more concerning is the use of “gut and replace” tactics to push this bill forward without proper transparency or public input. The bill now heads back to the Senate for concurrence, which is our last opportunity to stop it before it reaches the Governor’s desk.
I strongly urge you to contact your State Senator immediately and ask them to oppose Senate Bill 401 and stand against these procedural abuses that undermine our guaranteed rights protected by the Constitution.
As we look ahead to our 2025 State Convention, please note that delegate spots are still filling up, and we encourage anyone who is interested to reach out as soon as possible. This is a critical opportunity to have your voice heard and be part of shaping the future of our party.
All tickets to the convention must be purchased online by May 14th at midnight.

Finally, I’m pleased to share that we are finalizing the three names to submit to the Governor to consider for the replacement of Representative Gene Ward. The members of District 18 came together and voted on their panelists, and we commend them for conducting this important process with unity and efficiency.
Let us continue to rise to the occasion, speak the truth boldly, and move forward with integrity, purpose, and faith.
As President Donald J. Trump once said:
“We will be one people, under one God, saluting one American flag.”
With sincere appreciation,
Tamara McKay

On Friday, the Hawaii House passed Senate Bill 401 ([link removed]) , legislation that would expand the current ban on "assault pistols" to include certain rifles and shotguns in addition to banning standard capacity magazines. The bill will now head back to the Senate for a concurrence vote. This is the last opportunity to stop this bill before it heads to the Governor's desk.

Additionally, please call House Leadership and politely request them not to bring Senate Bill 401 for a floor vote given the deceptive political maneuvering that undermines a fair and open legislative process.
* Speaker Nadine K. Nakamura – (808) 586-6100
* Vice Speaker Linda Ichiyama – (808) 586-6220
* Minority Leader Lauren Matsumoto – (808) 586-9490
As reported last week ([link removed]) , (see flyer/image above) anti-gun legislators used procedural maneuvers to bypass deadlines and the committee hearing process by stuffing language from a defeated semi-automatic firearm ban bill into a new bill. The original bill, House Bill 893 ([link removed]) , did not receive a committee hearing in the Senate by the legislative deadline and should have been defeated for the year. On March 13^th, however, the Chair of the House Committee on Judiciary Committee inserted the language from HB 893 into SB 401, thereby bypassing a Senate committee hearing on the bill.
