Viewing the completed debris removal process at Palisades Elementary
Dear friends and partners,
This week, LAUSD took steps toward building a more modern and user-friendly school district. I’m proud that the Board unanimously approved my resolution to streamline and digitize outdated District systems ([link removed]) —making it easier for families to navigate our schools and for staff to focus less on onerous paperwork and more on supporting student success. This is about bringing our District into the 21st century and making government work better for the people we serve.
We also commemorated the contributions of Dolores Huerta, celebrated student artists and Academic Decathlon champions, and directed more than $100 million in funding for campus upgrades, outdoor learning spaces, and greener, modernized facilities across the District. These new investments come on the heels of a major milestone in our Palisades recovery efforts, ([link removed]) as I joined Mayor Bass, Supt. Carvalho, and local leaders to commemorate the completion of debris removal at all three schools damaged in the recent wildfire. With Earth Day around the corner ([link removed]) , these efforts are part of our larger $2.2 billion plan to create safer, more sustainable schools
([link removed]) and prepare our communities for the intensifying challenges of the climate crisis.

In the Community: The Latest from Board District 4
Over the past few weeks, my team and I have had the chance to visit Pali HS's temporary site, celebrate both Westwood ES and University HS's 100th centennials, check in on debris removal at Pali ES, join Disney Field Day with Marquez and Nora Sterry, attend the new UCLA Chancellor’s welcome reception, meet with community members at CicLAvia, support young chefs at Hesby’s student restaurant, celebrate the reopening of Brentwood Science’s school community park, join Bertrand ES for Leadership Day, cheer on Braddock ES’s student mariachi performance and Serrania ES’s spelling bee champs, and hear new ideas at this year’s VerdeXchange conference. So grateful for all the incredible moments and connections across our community!
In the Spotlight: Lokrantz Special Education Center celebrates sisterly love
There is no one better to tell the inspiring story of Alana Pakes, a Lokrantz student who is neurodivergent and non-verbal, than her twin sister, Adrianna. Motivated by a high school essay prompt to reflect on the most influential person in her life, Adrianna, who is neurotypical, decided to take the assignment one step further—turning their story into a must-read new book, That’s My Sister: Growing Up With My Special Needs Twin. From childhood memories to moments of triumph and understanding, this heartwarming story of two sisters approaching their high school graduations celebrates the unbreakable connection of family, embracing neurodiversity, and the transformative power of love.
