Right now, Republicans in Congress are going after Medicaid, trying to cut nearly $1 trillion from this vital safety net health care program in order to pay for tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires. And Medicare as we know it could be next on the chopping block.
Dr. Oz, who was recently confirmed to lead the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), and the Trump administration are already preparing to fully privatize Medicare by making Medicare Advantage the default enrollment option.1
Medicare Advantage is a type of plan offered within Medicare that is administered by private health insurers and typically covers 25% fewer services, creates narrow provider networks, requires prior authorizations, often results in more delays and denials, incentivizes less care than traditional Medicare, and exacerbates racial health inequities.2
Plus, it costs more: in 2024 alone, Medicare paid Medicare Advantage insurers at least $83 billion more than what it would cost the government to cover those same enrollees through traditional Medicare.3
Making Medicare Advantage plans the default for seniors on Medicare would be an enormous giveaway to the private health insurance industry all while hurting the rest of us!
Our for-profit health care system is already broken, and the GOP wants to make it even worse. We’re taking on the private insurance industry and working to expand Medicare so everyone in this country has the comprehensive care that they need, regardless of ability to pay – while the GOP tries to destroy it via privatization.
That’s why we need to fight back and strengthen our movement for a public health system through Medicare for All in this critical moment.
In solidarity,
Nurses’ Campaign to Win Medicare for All
