John,
Yesterday, the Agriculture Cmte held our first SNAP hearing of the year.
In March House Republicans passed a budget resolution that called on our committee to cut $230 billion from programs under our jurisdiction. This cannot happen without cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) .
SNAP is by far our most effective anti-poverty tool and is a vital safety net for families across the country.
Any cuts to this program could put the health of Americans in jeopardy, increase hunger, and worsen hardships for millions of families — including those with children, seniors, and people with disabilities.
In Connecticut, the estimated economic loss from the proposed SNAP cuts will reach a staggering $256 million.
This is irresponsible and wrong. I refuse to stay silent as Republicans use their majority to scrap a program that helps millions put healthy food on the table for their families.
So yesterday, I spoke up about the devastating effects of cutting SNAP. I will continue to speak out tirelessly to protect this vital program from being defunded.
“In 2023, more than 47 million Americans experienced food insecurity… While unemployment rates dropped, participation in the programs did not. It’s because the people who are benefiting from SNAP, for the most part, already work multiple jobs. I was one of those people — working two jobs and still qualified for SNAP benefits. So if my Republican colleagues want to have a real conversation, I’m introducing a piece of legislation to raise the federal minimum wage from $7.25 so if people are working two jobs, they can have a living wage.”
At every opportunity, I will raise my voice to defend the interests of working families. I am here and staying in this fight.
Now, I am asking you to join me. Please consider chipping in any amount to fuel my work. [[link removed]]

There is no shortage of obstacles ahead of us, John. But as I continue to speak out against these harmful policies, it is a privilege knowing that you have my back.
Thank you,
