Over the weekend, I joined thousands of protesters in Albany to send a message to the Trump administration that we won’t put up with their assault on our most basic freedoms.
But let’s be clear, this crisis of democracy, now wreaking havoc well beyond our borders, was decades in the making.
For too long, political leaders on both sides of the aisle have failed to muster the courage and moral fortitude to ensure that our government worked for the many, and not just for a privileged few. For too long, the concentrated power of wealth has undermined our system’s ability to ensure public goods like housing and health care, can actually be afforded by the people.
The result is not only a moment of reckoning, but also an opportunity for accountability and real change.
It’s up to the people to stand up and elect leaders willing to fight back against the overbearing power of monied interests in our system.
This also means getting rid of those elected officials who fail to meet the moment with a bold, ambitious and transformative vision.
I’m going to keep repeating this message in the days and weeks ahead. I will also be laying out what I believe that vision is, clearly and definitively. Now, more than ever, a new path is necessary and possible. But we will not chart it with the same politicians doing the same old things
