Dear FAMMily,
We are reaching out to alert our members of a phone scam impacting incarcerated people in the federal Bureau of Prisons and their families. People are receiving phone calls wherein the caller is identifying themselves as BOP employees to secure money for community placement services. The Federal Bureau of Prisons put out a statement today reiterating that the BOP does not contact individuals to request personal information or money.
There are other phone scam operations underway in which callers are identifying as “Federal Bureau of Prisons Reentry Division Services” to gain personal information or money for early release and/or community placement services.
In their notice to the public, the BOP recommends that individuals who are contacted by persons purporting to be employees of the FBOP requesting money and/or compensation should report these calls to the Federal Trade Commission online, https://reportfraud.ftc.gov or by phone at 1-877-382-4357 (9:00 a.m. – 8:00 p.m).
