Politics in a Nutshell
Trump plows ahead as markets plunge [[link removed]]
Trump’s new worldwide tariff war has already spelled disaster for our economy. The stock market tanked last week, and despite a small bounce-back on Tuesday morning, it had returned to red by Tuesday night. Donald Trump and Iowa Republicans in DC promised lower prices, not to drain retirement funds.
7 GOP senators sign on to bill to check Trump’s trade authority [[link removed]]
Iowa Senator Chuck Grassley, among others, has sponsored a bipartisan bill that would reign in Trump’s current control over foreign trade, and return some of that power back to the legislature where it belongs. Will Iowa's Mariannette Miller-Meeks, Zach Nunn, Ashley Hinson and Randy Feenstra support Grassley's bill? Or will they just keep siding with Trump?
Iowa lawmakers OK 2% funding hike for K-12 schools, sending it to Reynolds. What it means: [[link removed]]
The Iowa legislature has passed the funding package for the 2025-2026 school year, with a 2% percent spending increase for public schools. A percentage so low that it doesn’t even offset the effects of inflation. It puts most school districts into a budget guarantee and forces them to raise their tax levies. To no surprise, this lack of public funding is paired with a drastic increase in money for private schools, a whopping increase of over 40% from last year. Or in straight dollars, an additional 97 million. It’s up to us to replace legislators who are voting to give taxpayer money to private schools with folks who care about the average Iowan, and the public schools they rely on.

Where: 515 Douglas Ave, Ames, IA 50010

During this time Rep. Randy Feenstra has meetings that the majority of his constituents only hear about after they occur.
Join us to submit your questions and concerns to Rep. Feenstra. Attendees are invited to write their comments down. They will be read aloud by our moderators Rep. J.D. Scholten and Ryan Melton. After the event the questions will be sent to Rep. Feenstra. (We've informed him of this event and invited him but since he doesn't hold his own town halls, we don't expect he will attend ours.)
We’ll have note cards and pens, but you may write your submission ahead of time and bring it. Please be careful to write legibly. Legislators only tally communications if they can be verified to be from a constituent. So please include your full legal name and zip code. (We won’t read your name aloud at the event though the moderator will ask the author to raise their hand to identify themself if they wish.) Open to the public. Note From the Chair
Hey folks! Rita Hart here.
As the weeks continue on more of our 2024 predictions about Donald Trump’s Administration are proven true. His ignorant obsession with tariffs has driven our economy to the brink and created the possibility of recession both at home and abroad.
As long as the tariffs stay in place, our economy, our businesses, and our workers will pay the price. Inflation will only get worse in the coming months. As the stock market plummets and Iowans lose their retirement funds, Iowa’s Republican leaders should let us know whether they’re supporting Chuck Grassley’s bill to leave the final decision about tariffs up to Congress, or whether President Trump should continue to have unchecked power in this trading war. Please continue to call them and ask. Their contact information is listed in this email.
Our work continues,
Sincerely,
Rita Hart
