This week, everyone is talking about tariffs following President Trump's announcement of a series of tariffs as part of his so-called ‘Liberation Day’.

What is a tariff?
Import tariffs are a form of taxes charged on goods imported from other countries.
Why do politicians use tariffs?
Raising tariffs can be a way of protecting domestic industries, as they make it more expensive to purchase goods manufactured abroad. This prevents local manufacturers from being undercut by imports. For example, in 2024 the EU decided to charge duties between 17% and 35.3% on Chinese-manufactured electric vehicles.
What is the impact of tariffs?
Companies importing goods can increase prices to cover the cost of tariffs. They may choose to absorb the costs themselves and take lower profits. Alternatively, it’s possible that foreign manufacturers exporting goods to the US could lower their prices, which would likely impact their profits.

Several social media posts in mid-March suggested that the series was based on a real story involving a black boy, even though the main character in the drama was white.
And in interviews on 1 April, Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch appeared to make a similar claim, saying that she understood “that the boy who committed that crime was not white”.
However, the show’s co-creators have said the series isn’t based on any single case but was inspired by several incidents.

** How many people has Labour ‘deported’? ([link removed])

Several Labour politicians including Dame Angela Eagle and some media outlets have produced a confusing set of statements when it comes to Labour's record on immigration.
In our fact check we’re looking at two recurring claims, the first is that Labour has deported 19,000 or 24,000 people since coming to power. The second is that 19,000 people with no right to be here have been ‘sent home’ within the first nine months of the Labour government which is more than was achieved in any year in the last parliament.
