Dear John,
The Sentencing Project is proud to be headquartered in the District of Columbia. We’ve worked for decades to build a safer, stronger, and fairer city for all Washingtonians, featuring some of the most robust sentencing reform laws in the country.
But this progress is under threat. Last month, Congress passed budget legislation, a continuing resolution, cutting the DC government's budget by $1 billion for the current fiscal year, which would have a devastating impact on the city.
Thousands of Washingtonians and allies across the country, hundreds of local and national organizations, and our local elected leaders spoke out–and the Senate listened. The Senate passed the DC Local Funds Act, which would allow the District to use that $1 billion in taxpayer funds it has already raised. Now it’s up to the House of Representatives.
DC deserves power over its own budget, and your voice matters. We need you to call the House of Representatives to ensure that DC’s budget is not slashed.
