Fund communities, not private prisons and military contractors!
|
Dear Friend,
Last month, Donald Trump signed a funding bill to avert a government shutdown -- which included increases in funding by billions of dollars for the Pentagon and millions more for Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).
These increases in funding have been justified in the name of “national security.” But with a long list of overpriced and failed projects over the past two decades, Congress should be more wary of continuing to fund military programs that could lead to waste.1 And, with the Trump administration’s plans to ramp up deportation efforts in the country, much of this additional funding will also go towards paying for private prisons and detention centers that will cause family separation and enable mass deportations.
Ultimately, the corporations behind the military and prison industrial complex are the ones who are profiting and benefiting the most from this budget -- from weapons manufacturers to private prison contractors.2 But as Congress continues considering budget priorities in the coming months, we have an important opportunity in front of us to demand they do better.
True security for our communities comes from investing in programs that address food insecurity, housing instability, inequitable access to healthcare, and more. And if Congress truly wants to look for ways to cut waste, fraud, and abuse in government spending, they should start by looking at the funding allocated towards military spending and enforcing Trump’s racist immigration agenda.
That’s why we’re joining a coalition of organizations urging Congress to reject the extra funding for the Pentagon and ICE. And we need you to take action with us by sending a letter demanding the same from your representatives!

Demand Congress reject extra funding for ICE and the Pentagon!

Corporate Accountability is no stranger to the power and influence of the military-industrial complex. And we know that it’s possible to stop the excessive funding of corporations that profit from war, violence, and displacement -- and to use this money to invest in programs that improve people’s access to housing, healthcare, and education instead. In fact, we saw it happen at the height of the Cold War, when we launched a boycott on General Electric and helped end its involvement in producing parts for nuclear weapons.3
Neither the Pentagon nor ICE has passed a “clean audit” in years. This means that trillions of dollars are spent each year on programs that claim to enhance our national security but, in reality, could have been mismanaged or were ineffective.
Our communities deserve to feel safe, but not at the expense of programs like SNAP and Medicaid. Together, we must urge Congress to fund our communities instead of ICE and the Pentagon. So will you join us by taking action today?
