Dear Neighbors,

Spring is here, and with it, we have entered the phase of the legislative session where we will know which bills will continue to advance through the legislative process. House leaders announced an agreement last week on spending targets for crafting a state budget for the next two years. I’ll do a more in-depth overview at our upcoming Community Coffee Hour this Saturday, April 12 at 9:00 a.m. We’ll gather at Dunn Brothers (15265 Galaxie Ave, Apple Valley, MN 55124) for this casual conversation-style event. All are welcome; I hope to see you there!

Community Coffee Hour

It’s up to DFLers and Republicans to put together a bipartisan budget framework balancing the Senate budget targets [ [link removed] ] and the Governor’s budget recommendations [ [link removed] ], which all have significant differences from the House. Negotiations in the House Health Finance Committee are underway, and I’m hopeful we will be able to put together packages that continue to make life healthier and more affordable for Minnesotans.

On Monday, April 14 at 6:00 p.m., I’ll be joining South Metro regional legislators State Reps. John Huot (Rosemount), Kaela Berg (Burnsville), Bianca Virnig (Eagan), and State Senators Erin Maye Quade (Apple Valley) and Lindsey Port (Burnsville) for a regional Town Hall Meeting on how the federal government’s actions are impacting our neighbors in the South Metro area.

South Metro Town Hall Meeting

It’s an opportunity for people in our communities to voice their concerns, frustrations, and we’ll be sharing strategies about how to fight back. The link to RSVP can be found here [ [link removed] ]and the location will be shared upon registering.

*Advocacy Days at the Capitol*

I recently had the opportunity to chat and meet with members of the Minnesota Rare Disease Advisory Council for their advocacy day at the Capitol.

In my first year serving Apple Valley in the Minnesota House, we took a decisive step by establishing this council, embodying our commitment to amplifying the voices of rare disease patients. Witnessing the Minnesota Rare Disease Advisory Council’s advocacy firsthand, especially their efforts to advance newborn screening, long-term care services, and consumer protections, was truly powerful.

I am grateful for the partnership with Representative Amanda Hemmingsen-Jaeger (Woodbury) and Representative Liz Reyer (Eagan) as we work together to ensure this vital organization receives the bipartisan support it deserves.

I also recently met with Apple Valley residents advocating with the Service Employees International Union (SEIU). With proposed federal funding slashes to a variety of services seniors, children, and our most vulnerable Minnesotans rely on, [ [link removed] ]they’re fighting to preserve Earned Sick and Safe Time, Paid Family and Medical Leave, and the free school meal program, which we passed into law in the '23-'24 biennium. We must continue to partner with labor as we fight to protect economic security for working families.
