Dear John,
In January, we filed a lawsuit that challenges the constitutionality of a Utah law, H.B. 249, that strips courts of their authority to recognize the legal rights of certain nonhuman entities, including nonhuman animals, land, bodies of water, and artificial intelligence (corporations don’t appear to be impacted). The author of H.B. 249 cited the progress made by the NhRP in Happy the elephant’s case in New York as one reason for the bill’s introduction.
We now have an update in this case. Visit our website [[link removed]] to read a blog post by NhRP Senior Staff Attorney Jake Davis with the latest and what to expect next:

P.S. Speaking of Happy: we’ll have another update soon on our campaign to free Happy and Patty from the Bronx Zoo and pass Intro 213, a first-of-its-kind bill that would ban elephant captivity in New York. Keep an eye out for this email and how you can help!
