Good afternoon, John –

Sorry to remind you … But we’re a week out from Tax Day.

Even though Uncle Sam seems to always reach deeper and deeper into the pockets of hardworking citizens, I find some relief in the fact that Texas is one of the nine states that does not enforce a crippling state income tax.

As you know, though, that isn’t the whole story. The real burden Texans feel is the weight of property taxes.

If you own a house in Texas, you know that school districts, counties, cities, and special districts levy those property taxes. And because of local spending, the property tax burden has become almost confiscatory. Property “owners” are now essentially renting from the government. Those taxes are funding billion-dollar bonds for luxurious sports facilities in government schools and subsidizing exorbitant salaries for administrative bureaucrats.

The sad truth, though, is that we as citizens have let it happen by not being involved in local government.

Property tax burdens have increased by 330% over the last 25 years. If Texas is going to change course and protect its future, citizens must hold their elected officials accountable—and that starts with being informed and engaged on what’s happening in their communities. That’s what we do at Texas Scorecard each day.

Will you help us?
