John – climate change was just taken off the global threat list. But of course, that doesn’t mean that climate change is no longer a global threat – it just makes us willfully blind to the challenges ahead.
Let’s dig in.
The United States has included climate change as a threat to the United States and its interests abroad since 2009. Its potential to exacerbate global conflicts and cause instability makes it a threat multiplier.
Yet when Tulsi Gabbard was asked about this decision in a Senate hearing about why it had been removed, she responded that it was simply not a critical threat.
Let’s be clear: removing climate change from the list of global threats will only make our agencies less prepared for the future and Americans less safe.
Climate change has been shown to accelerate conflict. It helped contribute to a 2011 drought in Syria, a factor in sparking the Syrian civil war, and the resulting refugee crisis that swept Europe. As our planet continues to warm, the potential for conflict over water resources, agricultural land, and hospitable living space increases – and we need to be prepared.
The Trump administration is living in fantasy land - and we will all pay the price. His anti-science, anti-reality crusade is putting American lives at risk, all to line the pockets of his billionaire fossil fuel donors.
Our 100 SEEC members in Congress are leading the charge to push back against this egregious decision. We need leaders who will stand up to acknowledge and tackle scientific reality, not bury their heads in the sand to pretend a problem isn’t there.
