Interesting times in America...
Perhaps boring is better!
Many of our major cities descended into racially-motivated rioting last week. Antifa thugs targeted and murdered several uniformed police officers during the rioting. President Trump warned that the Insurrection Act of 1807 might be invoked. Admiral Mike Mullen, retired Chairman of the Joint Chiefs - who not so long ago was prominently mentioned as a potential running mate for Hillary Clinton - declared that the military should NEVER be used domestically. Adm. Mullen is ignoring the use of the military to quash the KKK, to quash the Veterans' riots in Washington during the Hoover years, to allow school integration in the 1950s, and even to quash the Los Angeles riots in 1992.
The statute that makes it unlawful for the military to operate domestically is the Posse Comitatus Act. That act has an exception within it for the Insurrection Act.
President Trump's warning, together with other forces at play, seems to have been effective, as the rioting has been brought under control.
While liberal-progressives do not want people returning to work due to COVID-19 fears, their feeling is that rioting is more important than disease control, and are not using public health fears to attempt to quell the riots.
The good news that overcame the situation is that 2.5 million jobs were added to the economy, even as economists were predicting a loss of 8-9 million jobs. The stock markets responded accordingly. States are re-opening. Florida is about to re-open fully, which will boost the local economy. Even the NYTimes predicts that New York City's reopening this week will add 400,000 jobs there.
And speaking of the NYTimes, jobs were lost there because someone had the temerity to run an Op-Ed by Sen. Tom Cotton that did not follow the Times' liberal-progressive dogma. The Times has now acknowledged a "Civil War" on the left between old-line liberals and "woke" progressives, with the former believing in quaint, antiquated ideas such as free speech and the latter believing that unfavorable ideas must be censored.
That's too much news for one week...
Interesting times indeed!

And locally...
Don't forget this coming weekend's boat parade!
