The concept of making polluters pay is simple: if you make a mess, you should have to help pay to clean it up. Fossil fuel corporations warmed our climate, and should pay their fair share of the costs!
Currently, Oregonians are paying for polluter’s damage, while fossil fuel companies continue to make hundreds of billions in profits from the last 30 years of emissions. And we know that climate change has already cost Oregon billions, and it’s only going to get worse. Fossil fuel corporations warmed our climate, and should pay their fair share of the costs!
Make Polluters Pay makes the largest oil, gas and coal companies liable for the costs of their pollution to our state. "Polluter pays" is a core principle of environmental law, as with SB 1187, only the largest polluters will be paying. The funds would be used for climate disaster adaptation and resilience efforts, as a “climate superfund”. If we pass SB 1187, Oregon will be more resilient for wildfires and other climate damage adaptation, including flood protection, upgrades to transportation and electric power grids, water supply and waste-water treatment systems, agriculture and fisheries, building retrofits, health of forests and other ecosystems, and other salient issues.
It’s time to tell polluters: you make a mess, you clean it up. Take action now to make polluters pay to clean up the mess they created!
