Minnesota Senator Eric Lucero banner image

Dear friends and neighbors,

Friday this week is the deadline for all bills to pass out of committees to be considered on the Senate Floor. I’m excited several bills I’m chief authoring or co-authoring have already passed their last committee stop, including the pro-consumer protection / HOA Reform bill SF1750 which passed out of Judiciary Committee Friday last week!

Judge Decision to Block Sen. Mitchell Body Cam Overturned

Yesterday, a three judge panel overturned a district judge's decision to block the release of the police body camera footage of the night Sen. Mitchell was arrested. Release of the body cam footage would assist bringing transparency to the events when law enforcement officer arrived on the scene. Release of the body cam may also prompt action regarding Sen. Mitchell in the Ethics Committee. Minnesotans deserve to know what happened that night and whether they can trust Sen. Mitchell and the votes she continues to cast in a nearly evenly split Senate.

Thank you to constituent Marsha for working with me to draft bill SF 2285, and to all the testifiers in support of my bill at the recent bill hearing in the Senate Education Finance Committee to correct the carry forward of unspent American Indian education aid into the following fiscal year.

Senate Democrats Introduce A Resolution Condemning President Trump

Background: Last week Democrats brought a Senate Resolution to the Floor seeking to condemn President Trump for pardons of January 6 protesters. Senate Republicans made multiple attempts to amend the resolution, including condemning the criminals who attacked the MN Capitol and toppled over the Christopher Columbus statue, condemn the criminals who rampaged across Minneapolis setting it on fire, and condemn the terrorist organization Hamas and their October 7 murderous attack on Israel. In hyper-partisan fashion, nearly every Republican amendment was ruled "out of order" by the Democrat President of the Senate, Senator Champion.

Why it matters: Why are Senate Democrats focused on the advancing their hyper-partisan resolution? Because the Democrat resolution was a political stunt by the Democrats. I have been clear, violence shall not be tolerated. Passing a partisan resolution accomplishes a grand total of precisely ZERO. The actions of the President of the United States are well outside the scope the MN Senate. We should focus on passing a balanced budget and protecting the rights of Minnesotans. We are facing a multi-billion dollar deficit in Minnesota and Gov. Walz is pushing to cut funding from schools and senior living homes.

Next Steps: Democrats seeking to dabble in national politics should resign and run for federal office while the rest of us work on fixing a broken Minnesota.

Gov. Walz's Budget Proposal Cuts Useful Funding Once Again

Background: Gov. Walz's budget proposal consists of dramatic funding cuts to non-public schools and to charter schools. Gov. Walz’s budget cut recommendations will force charter schools to cut staff and programs important to charter school students and staff.

Why it Matters: Gov. Walz would rather cut funding to schools before he cuts healthcare funding to illegal immigrants. Many are shocked Gov. Walz prioritized illegal foreign nationals ahead of Minnesota citizens. Charter schools provide students with unique learning experiences they may not receive at a regular public school. I strongly support the right for students and families to go to school where they want, whether that be public, private, charter, or homeschool education. Gov. Walz’s priorities are just plain wrong.

Next Steps: I am committed to help our schools with funding, not make it even harder for schools. There is enough money being wasted in non-critical areas, and Democrats should not be targeting our children’s education or the salaries of our great teachers so free healthcare can continue to be funded for illegal immigrants.

Sen. Lucero presenting the HOA Bill to the Judiciary Committee.

HOA Reform Passes Final Committee Stop

Background: After months of meeting in a Working Group that contained a broad cross-section of stakeholders in Home Owner’s Associations (HOAs) and Common Interest Communities (CICs), the HOA Reform bill I’m chief authoring, SF1750, was introduced earlier this session. After many more meetings with a multitude of different groups and individuals who provided feedback to improve the bill, SF1750 passed the Senate Judiciary Committee Friday last week after having passed Senate Housing Committee several weeks earlier.

Why it Matters: SF1750 has been heavily amended based on feedback and good discussions. In fact, the bill is the work product of years of requests for help from people across the state. Most HOAs are great communities with board members that seek to do the right thing. Unfortunately, there are HOAs with bad actors that exploit residents, have conflicts of interest, and lack transparency. SF1750 is pro-consumer protection legislation seeking to balance the scales between homeowners, HOA boards, and property management companies.

Next Steps: The next step is for SF1750 to be heard and voted on the Senate Floor The bill isn't scheduled yet, however I’m hopeful it will be soon.

In Other News

Democrats are questioning their brand and their priorities.

"Unprecedented tidal wave of fraud" right under the nose of Tim Walz and the Democrat trifecta, yet they did nothing to stop it.

Tim Walz texted me looking for money while he frolics around the country on his Knucklehead Tour instead of returning to MN, rolling up his sleeves, and working to fix the $6,000,000,000 deficit he caused.

I've been working to ensure student data privacy since I was first elected. Harvesting, mining, and sharing our children's private information continues to be intrusive and risky.
