April is Second Chance Month. 

Did you know that one in three American adults have a criminal record? This limits their access to opportunities necessary to successfully reenter society and thrive. Everything from education, jobs, and housing become out of reach for tens of thousands of Americans leaving them to struggle once out of prison. This is beyond unfair and goes counter to the supposed goal of the criminal legal system — rehabilitation and reintegration.

The Clean Slate Act would offer a real solution to break barriers and unlock opportunities for all. Over the last few years, federal lawmakers have introduced bipartisan Clean Slate legislation that would: 

• Create the process for sealing a federal arrest or conviction record
• Automatically seal federal possession or nonviolent records involving marijuana
