Despite the dire news coming out of Washington every day, this past week reminded us just how powerful you, me, and all of our neighbors are when we speak with one collective voice. [[link removed]] [[link removed]]
On Thursday, MCV members braved the snow and rain to fill the State House halls for Conservation Lobby Day . Together, with our partners, we lobbied legislators to protect Maine people and our communities from toxic PFAS chemicals, to make polluters – not Maine people – pay for the damage they’ve done to the environment, to lower energy bills and protect customers, and to ensure Maine is ready for future severe weather and storms caused by climate change. Then, this weekend, thousands of people in Maine and millions across all 50 states and U.S. territories peacefully protested the Trump administration’s attacks on democracy. The turnout was incredible. Over 2,000 people gathered at the Maine State House in Augusta, and thousands more turned out in Portland, Lewiston, and all across the state. Working together, we can still make progress on important issues and make a difference for Maine people and the environment we cherish. You can start by showing your support for some of MCV’s top priorities that we are advocating for this legislative session in Augusta. Here are two quick actions you can take today:
* Sign the Petition: Tell Gov. Mills and Maine legislators, "I support the Make Polluters Pay Act!" [[link removed]] * From last winter's storms alone, Maine faced over $90 million in damage to our public infrastructure. Right now, we (Maine’s taxpayers) are on the hook for that bill. In Maine, it should be the law that climate polluters pay for the damage they cause, which is exactly what this bill will do.


* Sign the Petition: Tell Governor Mills and Maine legislators, "I support the Energy Fairness Act!" [[link removed]] * This bill is about making a system that is fairer for everyone, saving Maine families money, protecting vulnerable customers from disconnections, demanding accountability and transparency from utilities, improving standards for the workers we all rely on, and facilitating the transition to 100% clean electricity.
