The challenges our state has faced these last few weeks have been a stark reminder for me of why I’m running.

I think a lot about my sons, and the world I want to hand down to them. A world where the dysfunction in Washington doesn’t keep us from making any changes when we so badly need them. One where our senator isn't the 'top salesperson' for gutting pre-existing condition protections, or playing a 'critical role' in giving away trillions of dollars in tax cuts to billionaires and big corporations that don't need them.

I decided to run because I'm not afraid to stand up to power. I know this about myself because I’ve done it before. I refused to be deterred when people on my path to becoming an Air Force pilot told me “the front is no place for a woman,” and then later when I successfully took on the government to improve military readiness by lifting the ban on women competing for ground combat positions in the military.

That’s why I’m running against Senator Cornyn -- because it’s time to stand up to the special interests -- and I know how to take on that fight.
