John,
This weekend I attended another protest against police brutality and for Black lives in Wilmington.
Over 1,000 people joined together to say we’ve had enough and to demand that we reimagine public safety as a concept grounded in guaranteeing the health, education, and prosperity of the people.
I am so grateful to the organizers of the march for creating the space for us all to hear from the people and families affected by police violence in Delaware specifically. We can’t ignore that the same things triggering worldwide uprisings happen here, too.
In fact, the sign I carried Friday made that exact point. We can’t shy away or forget the names of Jeremy McDole, Yahim Harris, Ricardo Hylton, Brandon Roberts, and so many more.
I’m inspired by the response I’m seeing from people here and across the country. This moment feels different. It’s bigger, farther-reaching, and refusing to back down.
This is how the people make change—by demanding it together. I hope this moment will help even more people see the power we hold when we work as one.
I’m proud to affirm Black lives matter and be a part of the fight for equality.
In solidarity,
Jess
