The City as Sponge: building resilience to flooding

Tuesday, April 15th • 7:30pm

Join 350Brooklyn as we launch our new series of presentations and workshops entitled "Facing the Future: Building Resilience in NYC." Our first meeting addresses the increase in torrential rains flooding our streets and basements, floods that have led to deaths from drowning. What is to be done? Sharing their expertise will be Nick Nyland of The City Sponge, Denise Hubbard and Drisana Hughes from the NYC Department of Environmental Protection, and Andrea Parker from the Gowanus Canal Conservancy. Register for the Zoom link to learn what actions people are taking right now and what you can do to help.

‘Protect Migrants, Protect the Planet’ Earth Day March

Saturday, April 19th • 12pm • Bryant Park

This Earth Day, New Yorkers are taking to the streets to send a clear message: NYC must stand up to Trump, defend immigrants, and fight for climate justice. Trump and Big Oil are fueling climate disasters, displacing millions, and attacking migrants. We know the recent ICE kidnapping of Palestinian activist Mahmoud Khalil was a blatant attack and intimidation on our rights to protest: join in and be counted! Register to join the march on the Summer of Heat’s website.

Meet 350Brooklyn founding member, Ieva Zadina

On this, our tenth anniversary, we celebrate our volunteers, for they are the heart of 350Brooklyn. And there's no one better to start off our celebration than Ieva Zadina, for Ieva was one of our founding members. Born on a farm in Latvia and displaced from Europe by war, Ieva attributes her deep connection to nature and her equally deep appreciation of community to those early experiences. She was drawn to climate work through reading the inspired language of Bill McKibbon. Our future depends on community, she says, "and what a great community 350Brooklyn is." A steadfast member of our Steering Committee, she advocates for modeling ourselves on the cooperation and reciprocity found in nature.

RESIST!

Defending LGBTQ+ Rights

It’s no secret that the Trump administration is actively working to disenfranchise and harm the LGBTQ+ community. From restricting healthcare access for transgender youth to banning trans people from the military to eliminating federal nondiscrimination protections, and removing LGBTQ+ and HIV-focused resources from key federal websites, the message is clear: LGBTQ+ people are under attack—and we must rise to protect them.

How can you actively be an ally?

Speak up.
It’s simple but powerful. Don’t let the media—or this administration—normalize anti-LGBTQ+ rhetoric. Instead, normalize LGBTQ+ existence and call out bigotry for what it is. When you hear someone voice hateful or ignorant views, challenge them. Show your solidarity visibly—with a pin, a sticker, or a T-shirt. Write letters of outrage to Congress or attend a rally to protect LGBTQ rights— the Brooklyn Pride event is coming up on June 14th. Every bit helps!

Support organizations fighting for LGBTQ+ rights:

  • Christopher Street Project
  • The Trevor Project
  • PFLAG
  • ACLU – LGBTQ+ Rights
  • The Center

Share resources.
Reach out to LGBTQ+ people in your life. Talk honestly about how these policies are affecting them and ask how you can best be supportive. Here’s a helpful collection of resources: GLAAD Resource List

Know your rights.
GLAD Law offers an excellent database of LGBTQ+ legal protections, searchable by issue and state. They also provide free legal info and lawyer referrals: GLAD – Know Your Rights

This administration wants us exhausted and hopeless—but we’re not giving up. Together, we can resist, protect each other, and reclaim our right to live openly, freely, and with pride.
