Another day, another lawsuit against the Trump administration:
On Friday, I co-led 16 attorneys general in suing the Trump Administration, the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) for failing to disperse grant funds and for unlawfully terminating existing grants for medical and public health research institutions across the country.
President Trump and HHS Secretary RFK Jr. are illegally holding up critical grants for life-saving medical research, and I’m once again suing to hold them accountable.

In 2024 alone, NIH awarded $5.15 billion in grants and contracts that supported 55,000 jobs and $13.81 billion in economic activity here in California. We cannot afford to lose that, or the promise of progress for future generations’ health.
Over the decades, research funding like this has brought humanity the eradication of polio, the discovery of the gene that causes breast and ovarian cancer, and the transformation of HIV from a fatal disease into one people can live with.
