The anniversary of an infamous Chinese crackdown comes during one of America’s own worst abuses of power

John,

Did you hear what Nancy Pelosi said about last week’s anniversary of the massacre at Tiananmen Square?

Ironically, the anniversary of this infamous Chinese crackdown comes during one of America’s own worst abuses of power: Trump inviting military deployments to suppress Black Lives Matter demonstrations. He threatened to send troops to every state in the union, before retired generals publicly rejected the suggestion last week.

Meanwhile, acts of police violence suppressing constitutionally protected dissent—ironically, in response to previous police violence—continued to mount by the dozens.

Our campaign has been actively participating in recent demonstrations, and developed our policy platform to reflect the movement’s demands. Can you help us take our solidarity to Congress?

How did Nancy Pelosi remember Tiananmen Square during this poignant moment in our history? Did she note the legacy of protest, and the sad choice made by the Chinese government to choose order over freedom of expression?

No.

Unbelievably, she focused on China's policy on corporate intellectual property. She took no action to address police abuses, or restrictions on dissent, or authoritarianism—all of which we see here in our own country right now.

With innocent Black Americans murdered with impunity in broad daylight, and protesters being injured across the country, the threat of our own Tiananmen experience hangs over our heads.

Why is Pelosi so quick to worry about corporate nickels and dimes, and so slow to talk about creeping fascism, or do anything to challenge it?

Maybe it’s all the contributions she receives from corporations & their lobbyists. Or maybe it’s because she'd already voted for Trump’s expanded military budget and increased surveillance powers—both of which have already advanced authoritarianism in America,.

However we might explain Pelosi’s skewed priorities, we need a voice in Congress with different ones.

We’ve taken direct action in solidarity with the movement for black lives.

We’ve proposed visionary federal reforms that would transform our criminal justice system—one of which, ending qualified immunity, is the subject of a bill proposed in Congress just last week by Reps. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) & Justin Amash (R-MI).

Pelosi does not support that bill.

Before running for Congress, I worked with a series of non-profits to challenge policing abuses at the local level in cities across the United States. Between the Bill of Rights Defense Committee (now known as Defending Rights and Dissent) and the Electronic Frontier Foundation, I spent a decade organizing campaigns to expand civil rights from coast-to-coast, and wrote portions of our country’s leading local civil rights law.

That’s why I’m running to replace Pelosi as the 12th congressional district’s elected Representative in Congress—to offer San Francisco a voice in Washington that has stood with our city, and our values.
