News from Representative Bera

Dear John,

I wanted to share an update on the work I’m doing in Congress to stand up for our community and push back against the Trump administration’s harmful agenda.

We continue to see this administration take actions that undermine the rule of law, gut essential government services and make life more expensive for hardworking families.

Just recently, President Trump issued a reckless executive order that could lead to voter suppression –– and I’m fighting back. I also opposed another order targeting federal workers by stripping away their collective bargaining rights. These are the folks who keep our government running, and they deserve a voice on the job and basic respect.

Meanwhile, instead of lowering costs like he promised, President Trump has reignited a trade war. His new tariffs triggered the biggest stock market drop since March 2020 — and they’re going to raise prices on everything from cars to groceries. These tariffs are nothing more than a tax on working Americans. We should be working to fight inflation, not fuel it.

Here in Sacramento County, we continue to see the consequences of President Trump’s agenda. The administration recently cut $26.8 million in CDC funding that supported critical local public health efforts — including vaccine access, expanded lab capacity, and outreach to underserved communities. These cuts not only threaten vital health services, but also put local jobs at risk. That’s why I’ve signed onto a letter demanding that Secretary Kennedy immediately restore this essential funding.

In recent weeks, I’ve taken action to:

  • Protect access to health care and reproductive freedom, including for veterans
  • Defend public education and stop efforts to dismantle the Department of Education
  • Fully fund special education and preserve programs like TRIO that serve students from disadvantaged backgrounds
  • Push back on cuts to food assistance and environmental protections
  • Stand up for unaccompanied children in immigration custody
  • Hold the Trump administration accountable for national security breaches — and call for the removal of individuals like Darren Beattie, a known white nationalist, from positions of public trust
  • Support a legal brief to protect USAID from political interference and defend Congress’s constitutional authority over how taxpayer dollars are spent

These are tough times, but I’m not backing down. I’ll keep doing everything I can to stand up for our values, advocate for Sacramento County and make government work for you.

Please keep reading below for more on what I’ve been working on — and thank you, as always, for staying informed and engaged. If you’d like real-time updates, I encourage you to follow me on Facebook, Instagram, X, Bluesky and Threads.

Be well,

Taking Action on Mail Theft in Sacramento County

Image

I’ve heard from many of you about the rise in mail theft and cluster mailbox break-ins in our community — and I’ve taken your concerns directly to the U.S. Postal Service.

Last year, I requested an official audit from the USPS Inspector General. That audit is now complete — and the findings are completely unacceptable. A shocking number of master mailbox keys are missing and likely being used to commit these crimes.

The Postal Service is a vital public institution. We must protect it, invest in it and ensure it delivers the safe, reliable service every American deserves. But we also have a responsibility to hold it accountable. USPS must swiftly implement the Inspector General’s recommendations to help restore public trust and ensure that Sacramento County residents get their mail delivered securely and on time.

Standing Up for our Public Schools

Image

I recently joined Sacramento County Superintendent of Schools Dave Gordon to highlight the Trump administration’s devastating proposed cuts to public education. These cuts would have a serious impact on local classrooms, programs and opportunities for students across Sacramento County.

I’ll continue doing everything I can in Congress to stop these cuts and work with educators and community leaders to stand up for Sacramento County students and families.

$20 Million Returned to Sacramento County Families

Image

Since taking office in 2013, my dedicated team of caseworkers has successfully resolved more than 32,000 cases for constituents — helping return over $20 million in federal benefits to families across Sacramento County.

These funds include backlogged veterans’ benefits, expedited tax refunds, and resolved issues with Social Security and Medicare payments. In uncertain times like these, that kind of support can make a real difference.

If you or someone you know needs help dealing with a federal agency, don’t hesitate to reach out. Visit bera.house.gov/casework or call my office directly at (916) 635-0505.
