Happy World Health Day!

When Margaret Turley first joined Special Olympics back in 2015, she had one goal: Play some sports and make some friends. (Nailed it, by the way!) What she didn’t expect? Becoming an international advocate for unapologetic and inclusive health care access! 

Because here’s the truth: Despite facing significantly higher health risks, people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) are still left behind by medical systems everywhere. That’s because only 25% of medical professionals are trained to treat people with IDD. Too many athletes with IDD simply don’t receive the dignity of care that they should.

This World Health Day, stand with courageous athletes like Margaret and help Special Olympics build a world where NO person with IDD goes without necessary health screenings or attention to their unique needs. Please donate before World Health Day ends at midnight.

Margaret is not just “playing the game” – she’s changing it. As a Special Olympics Sargent Shriver Global Messenger, she is using her powerful voice to fight for EVERY athlete with ID who still lacks access to the care and support they need. 

At the World Winter Games in Turin, Italy, last month, Margaret spoke to athletes and health leaders from around the globe. She urged them to continue strengthening the Healthy Athletes program because she knows firsthand how life-changing it is. 

Margaret’s challenge to the world: Take what you learn here and bring it home. 

In 2023, Special Olympics provided over 72,000 FREE health screenings for athletes – from eye to ear to dental and mental health support. We’re proud to help athletes build healthier, happier futures every single day.
