Hello,

Hadiya Pendleton traveled all the way from Chicago to Washington to perform at President Barack Obama's second inauguration.

Back at home only a week later, Hadiya was shot and killed in a park after school. She was 15 years old.

Her friends wore orange in her memory and, since then, advocates have worn orange as a symbol of their commitment to commonsense gun reform and violence prevention.

As this Wear Orange Weekend comes to a close, I hope you'll help turn America orange and join me in demanding action.

Help prevent the deaths of more young people like Hadiya. Tell Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to call for debate and a vote on commonsense gun reforms as soon as the COVID-19 pandemic is over.

Over 100 Americans are killed by gun violence every day. And according to the Centers for Disease Control, firearms are the number one cause of death for American children and teens. The numbers are staggering.

But Hadiya wasn't just a number. Nor were the students and teachers who were killed at Sandy Hook Elementary or at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School. Every single one of the Americans who are killed by guns each and every day represent a human life lost and a family destroyed. Every single one of them had friends and family who loved them, and who remember them each day.

Wearing orange is a symbolic and important way to show you stand for commonsense gun reform, and alongside the families and friends of victims who are demanding change. Together, we can make sure that none of these lives lost were in vain.

It's been more than a year since the House of Representatives passed H.R. 8, a bipartisan universal background checks bill, yet Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell has refused to allow the Senate to vote on this important legislation. It's long past time for the Senate to consider background checks and other commonsense gun measures, like a ban on military-style assault weapons and high-capacity magazine limits.

Together, let us honor the lives lost to gun violence by taking action and fighting for lasting change. Join me in demanding a vote on commonsense gun reform.
