John, it’s Ruben.

I’ve spent the last few days processing the fallout after Trump tanked the economy. I don’t like to mince words, and I’m not afraid to tell you how I feel about something.

So, here it is: This is probably the dumbest thing a president has ever done.

There were a lot of problems with the way things were going before Trump took office. Prices were too high, wages were too low. Millions of people struggled while millionaires and billionaires kept getting richer.

But there were bright points, too. Manufacturing — especially advanced manufacturing — was coming back. In Arizona we’ve had billions invested in the production of microchips domestically, which was huge. We were investing in infrastructure and clean energy. Unions were getting stronger, wages steadily increasing.

We were on a path to something better.

Now, retirement funds are in the tank. Auto plants are laying off staff. Manufacturers are scrambling to figure out how they’ll stay afloat. Our allies and our closest trading partners are walking away from us, and towards China. And through it all, leadership in the GOP is moving as fast as they can to pass trillion dollar tax cuts for millionaires and billionaires and blow up services that regular people depend on.

I’m sorry, but this is just incalculably stupid. For better or worse, the United States built the global economy — and we put ourselves at the center of it. Trump lit it on fire last Wednesday, and then he clocked out to take a long weekend golfing.

No single American should have that power. In the Senate, I am going to push to reign in Trump and put limits on his power, and I’ll take any allies I can get. There’s some movement on this already, and I’m hopeful we can do more.

And you can be absolutely sure — today, and through the rest of this administration — that I am going to tell everyone I can that all of this is Donald Trump’s fault.

Hang in there, John. And please, take care.

Talk soon,

Ruben
