For all of the alarming stories the Center for Investigative Reporting has published about President Donald Trump and his new administration, one story by our Mother Jones team stands out: our March 26 investigation about Venezuelan deportees and their tattoos. A resulting interview on MSNBC was viewed more than 400,000 times on Instagram alone, and our reporting was picked up by publications across the political spectrum, from Rolling Stone to the Dallas Morning News and the conservative The xxxxxx. For good reason. What our reporters—Isabela Dias and Noah Lanard—found was shocking.
Noah and Isabela spoke to the families of 10 men with no criminal records who were deported to a notorious prison in El Salvador and were targeted, it appears, simply for having tattoos—honoring their moms, their faith, and, in one case, autism awareness. Let me repeat that: For showing his love for his little brother who has autism, a young man who worked in a bakery in Dallas was taken to a brutal prison in a country he has never been to.
