Did you hear the fantastic news on Friday?

Dear John,

Did you hear the fantastic news on Friday? Controversial plans for a coal mine at Whitehaven in Cumbria are officially over. After 8 years of legal challenges and local campaigning, West Cumbria Mining has withdrawn its planning application. Its finally time to celebrate.

First, I want to say thanks to all of you who’ve donated or taken action to stop the mine. Thousands of you have been part of this.

We also offer huge congratulations to all the brilliant local campaigners who fought so powerfully to stop this mine. We’re so proud to have supported them all these years.

There’s more information about this long-running saga on our website. Including our massive legal win last year when planning permission for the mine was quashed following legal challenges by us and South Lakes Action on Climate Change (SLACC).

And if you’re keen to take part in more wins like this in the future – and we all know a lot more wins are needed given the scale of the climate crisis – please consider setting up a monthly donation today.

I'LL DONATE FOR MORE VICTORIES

The focus must now switch to ensuring local people get the green jobs they so urgently need – areas like West Cumbria have been left behind for far too long. This coal mine was never the right answer.

Thank you again for all your support. We couldn’t achieve anything like this without you.

Best wishes,

Tony Bosworth
