Hi John,
Donald Trump is ripping up the rulebook of globalisation which has been the orthodoxy for decades, but what he's replacing it with will hand even more power to corporations and the super-rich.

I wanted to make sure that you'd seen we are organising an emergency webinar this coming Wednesday to try and make sense of it all, and chart a way forward for global justice.

Trump, tariffs and the US trade deal

Webinar: Wednesday 9 April, 7pm-8.15pm
Speakers: Nick Dearden, director of Global Justice Now
Ruth Bergan, head of policy and advocacy, Transform Trade

Trump has set light to the global economy. He has unleashed a world of pain, not least for a group of global south countries that will suffer tremendous impoverishment as a result of his punitive tariffs. It is a brutal reorganisation of the world economy, which Trump hopes will boost American power and the wealth of the oligarchs who stand behind him.

Trump’s tariffs will decimate global south economies from Cambodia to Madagascar to Bangladesh. In many cases, these countries geared their economies to export-led growth on the orders of the US and US-dominated international institutions. Now they are being punished by that same country.

And in the UK we’re faced with a government doing an emergency trade deal with Trump which gives away our data to the Big Tech oligarchs, scraps our right to tax and regulate them properly, and even junks ‘trade barriers’ like the food standards which prevent US agribusiness importing chlorinated chicken.

Is this the biggest change to the global economy in 50 years? Why is Trump doing this and who wins? What are the real life consequences for people around the world? And what can we do to stand up to Trump’s bullying and start to build an economy where people and planet come before the interests of the super-rich?

Join trade experts Nick Dearden and Ruth Bergan to have your questions answered.
