My family came here with $12 to pursue the California Dream. I was born and raised by my parents in Sacramento, where they taught my siblings and me the value of hard work. Despite those humble beginnings, they were able to own a home, send the four of us kids to college or the military, and set aside enough to retire with dignity. To me, that’s the California Dream – and that’s what I’m fighting to protect. Because today, despite having the largest economy in the country, that dream of owning a home, raising a family, and retiring with dignity is all too hard for Californians to attain. That’s why I’m promising to build our state’s economy, create opportunities and lower costs for working families, and protect the California we all love. John, I’ve spent most of my life serving the people of California in the state legislature, Congress, as Attorney General, and then as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
