VIDEO OF THE DAY: Feud erupts between judge & Trump team as Trump mocks court order
The Trump administration showcased its utter disdain for our judiciary and the rule of law by mocking a judge's order to immediately return Kilmar Armando Abrego Garcia from El Salvador. Press Secretary Karolin Leavitt put out a sneering statement saying that "we suggest the Judge contact President Bukele because we are unaware of the judge having jurisdiction or authority over the country of El Salvador.” The ball is now in the judge's court; how will he respond to this infuriating defiance of his authority?

VIDEO OF THE DAY: Massive protest break out against Trump across the nation
The American public put on a rousing display of defiance to Donald Trump, Elon Musk, and their fascistic regime by taking the the streets by the tens of thousands. Over 1,400 seperate "Hands Off!" protest marches took place in all 50 states, with some people braving torrential downpours and some, like Cathy O’Donnell, flew across the country to take part. “The only thing I want for my birthday is for him to be gone. This is not ok. My father fought in World War II against the fascists. All of what they are doing – destroying the government, taking things from people, it makes me sick. I can’t sleep at night. It’s just terrible. I have been protesting in Columbus and I thought, well, the place I want to be today is in DC," said O'Donnell tothe Irish Times. An inspiring first show of defiance and solidarity that surely will not be the last.

Marine veteran answers call to resist Trump
JoAnna Mendoza for Congress: JoAnna Mendoza served our country for twenty years as a drill sergeant in the United States Marines, training the brave men and women who defend our country overseas, and now she’s ready to defend our nation from Donald Trump’s extremism in the halls of Congress. As a lifelong public servant, JoAnna refuses to sit idly by while Donald Trump and Elon dismantle the systems that provide for our veterans after their service and send countless more vets to the unemployment line with their gutting of the federal government. Will you chip in to help Joanna flip this winnable red seat and take back control of Congress from the GOP?
Only one thing explains Trump’s tariff madness
Timothy Noah, The New Republic: "I’m starting to believe April 2 really will be Liberation Day. But instead of liberating us from foreign imports, it will liberate us from any lingering illusion that Trump’s tariffs are about anything more than eliminating the progressive income tax. News accounts about President Donald Trump’s tariffs routinely mention that raising revenue is one of Trump’s stated goals. But they hurry quickly past this because it’s totally idiotic to think tariffs could ever replace the income tax, even partially, as a meaningful source of federal revenue. And they’re right: This idea is really, really stupid! Where the press goes wrong is in not plumbing the depths of Trump’s commitment to this stupid idea. How stupid? Well, the IRS last year collected $2.96 trillion from income taxes on individual and corporate income, and the United States imported $3.3 trillion in foreign goods. You’ll note these numbers are pretty close. To replace all income tax revenue, you’d have to impose a tariff of nearly 100 percent on all foreign imports. Not gonna happen! Too stupid! But when was anything too stupid for our commander in chief to believe? The press corps can’t accept that Trump has stupid motives because it’s too invested in the 'coherence fallacy,' a term I borrow from theology. In politics, the coherence fallacy is the presumption that everything an officeholder does follows some shrewd but unspoken calculation of self-interest. So you can imagine how wide of the mark it falls with Trump, who—impaired already by malignant narcissism and functional illiteracy—demonstrates on a near-daily basis growing signs of cognitive decline (the latest example being his petulant response last weekend to whether the tariffs would raise auto prices: 'I couldn’t care less'). If Trump were your elderly grandpa, you’d have taken the car keys from him months ago and would be starting to investigate assisted living."

MAGA "Lefty" is not a thing
Kyle Kulinski & Nathan J. Robinson, Current Affairs: "Recently, political commentator Batya Ungar-Sargon made what is possibly one of the least true statements ever made about American politics. Explaining why she supports Donald Trump while considering herself a 'leftist,' Ungar-Sargon said that 'Democrats are struggling [because] Trump stole their New Deal agenda, outflanking them to the Left with pro-worker economics and anti-war foreign policy, so they decided to fight him by defending men exposing themselves in girls locker rooms.' On Bill Maher’s HBO show, Ungar-Sargon said she was a 'MAGA Lefty' because 'Trump’s agenda is everything I believe in: pro-worker, anti-war, pro-gay, Americans First. This was the Democrats’ agenda for a century. Now it’s Trump’s.' She says that the core belief of 'the labor left' is that the working class 'is the backbone of any society… along with all the other stuff being anti-war, being pro-free speech. This was all left stuff, and now it's MAGA stuff.' She added that 'basically, you have a New Deal Democrat in Trump.' Truly, what is it about Donald Trump that causes some people to shut their brains off entirely? What is it about this man that makes people stop thinking critically and actually analyzing evidence, data, and reality? To say that a “MAGA lefty” position is not a thing is the understatement of the century. It requires a total willful ignorance of everything Trump is actually doing in office. It’s only possible to portray Trump as a pro-worker, anti-war 'New Deal Democrat' if you assess Trump by what he says at rallies ('[Liz Cheney is] a radical war hawk,' etc.'), or the vibes he tries to give off, and not by his actual policies. If you think Trump is 'pro-worker' because he bashes NAFTA, you are a sucker. If you think Trump is 'anti-war' because he called the Cheneys or Kamala Harris a warmonger, you are a sucker. You should not listen to anything any politician says. It’s what they do that matters. Don’t get caught up in the language. Always look at the actions, not the words."

Trump’s attacks on law firms are an attack on law itself
David Cole and Amrit Singh, The Guardian: "If you are systematically engaged in lawbreaking, lawyers can be very annoying. They sue, and their suits may lead courts to declare your actions illegal. So Donald Trump, who has launched his second term with a blizzard of blatantly illegal actions, many of which have been suspended by the courts, has decided to address the problem at its root. He’s targeting lawyers, punishing them for doing nothing more than filing lawsuits he opposes, or hiring lawyers he does not like. He has issued unprecedented executive orders penalizing five of the nation’s major law firms, and more are likely to come. These tactics, blatantly illegal, are designed with one goal in mind: to chill lawyers’ willingness to challenge his illegal actions. They are a fundamental attack on the foundation of the rule of law. And they are achieving their purpose, not because they are legal – they obviously are not – but because too many law firms are surrendering to Trump’s illegal demands. Trump’s executive orders make no attempt to hide their unconstitutional retaliatory motive. They single out individual law firms by name, complain about the firm’s cases and association with individuals Trump regards as his enemies, and impose a series of sanctions: lifting security clearances for all their lawyers, barring federal business with them, excluding them from federal buildings (which means they can’t even go to court) and requiring federal contractors to disclose whether they have used the firm. In an order targeting WilmerHale, one of the nation’s most prestigious law firms, Trump complains that it hired Robert Mueller, the former FBI director who investigated possible Russian interference in the 2016 election. If the United States is to be governed by the rule of law, lawyers and law firms cannot bow down to such unlawful assaults on the legal profession’s independence. Their duties as officers of the court require them to stand and fight. If lawyers are afraid to challenge unlawful actions by the administration, Trump will be free to act extra-legally. It has long been a bedrock of the American system that anyone harmed by official action can challenge that action in court, even where the official is the president himself. But that depends on lawyers maintaining their independence."
