THIS DAY IN HISTORY
Leaders Urged Those in the Military to "Trust in God"
On April 6, 1917<[link removed]>, the US entered World War I. President Woodrow Wilson summarized<[link removed]> America’s intent in becoming involved in this and future conflicts: “The world must be made safe for democracy.”

More than 53,000 American soldiers lost their lives<[link removed]> in WWI to uphold this ideal. Today, let’s remember these service members and the war they fought in.

Throughout American history, Bibles have been distributed to soldiers going into war. These Bibles would often include messages from leaders on the importance of Bible reading. For example, a letter from President Woodrow Wilson appeared in a WWI era Bible.
Another WWI Bible contains a note from General John Pershing<[link removed]> printed inside the cover. (Pershing was in command<[link removed]> of the American forces in WWI.) This letter provides a remarkable insight into his faith.

In every conflict throughout America’s history, the Bible has reassured and inspired soldiers, sailors and flyers. We hope this reminds you to keep the spiritual and physical wellbeing of our military men and women in your prayers .
