Dear John,

We’re taking big steps toward making it easier, faster, and more affordable to build in New Zealand.

Right now, tradies are tied up in paperwork, building materials cost too much, and getting land for important projects like hospitals, roads and housing developments takes too long. We’ve heard the frustration from builders, first-home buyers, and families – and we’re doing something about it.

This week we announced we’re:

- Making it easier to use trusted products from overseas. That means up to 250,000 more options for things like plasterboard, cladding, and insulation – so your build or reno can be more affordable and less stressful.
- Increasing the size of granny flats that can be built without a resource consent, from 60 to 70 square metres. That means more affordable, flexible space for you and your family and fewer hoops to jump through.
- Backing good tradies by cracking down on cowboys. You deserve to know the person working on your home is skilled and trustworthy, so we’re tightening the rules on who can do the work.
- Speeding up the process of buying land for hospitals, roads, and housing – offering up to $100,000 to landowners who agree to sell early. This means fewer delays and faster progress.
We’re clearing out red tape and giving tradies the tools to get on with the job. This is just the beginning – there’s more to come as we fix our building system and make it easier for every Kiwi to have a place to call home.

Regards,

Chris Penk
Minister for Building and Construction
