EMILY’S MESSAGE:
It’s been a tough few months to be a new member of Congress, to be a Democrat, to be an American.
I know you know what I mean.
Attacks on our communities, our country, and our Constitution. Reckless and dangerous decisions by the President and his billionaire bestie. Congressional Republicans unwilling to stand up and defend their constitutional mandate to be a check and balance to the executive branch. Job losses, defunding healthcare and Social Security and housing and education and foreign aid and veterans’ services and libraries.
BUT — This week, we began to see their grip on power faltering:
👉🏽 Senator Cory Booker held the Senate floor for more than 25 hours, sharing stories from real people about what they are facing because of President Trump, Elon Musk, and Congressional Republicans.
👉🏽 Speaker Mike Johnson tried to thwart a bipartisan effort to allow new parents to vote — tying it up with the so-called “SAVE Act” that disenfranchises American voters (especially women) — and the vote went down in flames. He underestimated women and mothers. He overestimated his own power. He didn’t know how to count his votes, and no amount of arm-twisting/bargaining/holding the vote open could keep him from losing.
👉🏽 Democrat Susan Crawford WON the Wisconsin Supreme Court special election, even though Elon Musk spent millions to rig it, including illegal efforts to bribe voters.
👉🏽 While the Republican candidates won the Florida special elections, they did so by a margin half as strong as Trump’s win in November in that same district.
The pressure that regular people are exerting on politicians, the stories folks are telling about the impact of executive action, the volunteering for special elections, the crowds showing up in our communities day in and day out — IT’S WORKING.
There is no power stronger than the power of the people. Keep showing up, day in and day out!
