Catching Up with Quigley: Week In Review

Dear John,

It was another busy week in Washington, D.C., trying to hold the Trump administration accountable for its many failures. Here are three steps I took to speak for you:

1. Answered Your Questions at a Town Hall with Indivisible

Yesterday, I was honored to join constituents at an in-person town hall at Waters Elementary School with Indivisible Lincoln Square. We discussed how Donald Trump is a danger to our country and the rule of law, what I’m doing in Congress to stop him, and what you can do to help.

Here’s the takeaway: I believe our country is in a constitutional crisis. We have a President who is pushing our country into authoritarianism—and firing anyone who gets in his way. Additionally, he’s hurting families across America by raising the costs of goods with his tariff policy and coming after the hospitals, schools, and libraries they hold dear. Times like these can make people feel hopeless.

But I promise you there’s hope. In Congress, I have my voice and my vote. I’m proud to have voted against the dangerous CR and other Republican legislation that would give Trump more power. I’m proud to use my voice to join my fellow Democrats in speaking up, including Senator Cory Booker of New Jersey, who just broke the record for the longest speech on the Senate floor. And I’m proud to represent you in the House of Representatives.

But Democrats must win back the majority to advance legislation, and we need a bigger tent to do that. That’s where you come in. Volunteer at your local food bank, religious organization, or community group. Rally and protest. Even talking to your neighbors can help—communicate with people anytime you can.

Together, we can get through this administration and persevere.

2. Banded together with all House Democrats to Stop Business as Usual and Support New Parents

On Tuesday, I was proud to join all of my fellow Democrats and nine Republicans in the House to stop Speaker Mike Johnson from killing a bill that would allow new parents serving in Congress to vote remotely.

The resolution was first introduced by Congresswoman Anna Luna (R-Florida) and Congresswoman Brittany Pettersen (D-Colorado). Congresswoman Pettersen flew back to DC from her home state just weeks after giving birth to vote against Johnson’s February spending bill.

No new mom or dad should have to fly across the country to vote on legislation while they have a newborn at home. I applaud Congresswoman Pettersen for taking a stand, and I commend Congresswoman Luna and the eight other Republicans for joining us Democrats in this bipartisan fight.

Together, we halted all official business in the House and stopped Mike Johnson’s attempt to kill this bill. He even had to cancel votes this week to avoid voting on it!

We need to continue to keep up the pressure on House Republicans. I hope to vote on the bill when we return to Washington next week.

3. Led a Bipartisan, Bicameral Push to Support Ukraine by Sanctioning Russia

On Wednesday, I joined my fellow Congressional Ukraine Caucus Co-Chairs—Congressman Brian Fitzpatrick (R-Pennsylvania), Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur (D-Ohio), and Congressman Joe Wilson (R-South Carolina)—in introducing sweeping sanctions targeting Russia for its war against Ukraine. These sanctions will punish aggression by Russia and any nation or actor complicit in sustaining the war. Senators Richard Blumenthal (D-Connecticut) and Lindsay Graham (R-South Carolina) introduced companion legislation in the Senate, backed by 48 other Senators from both sides of the aisle

Due to Putin’s continued, unbridled aggression against Ukraine, this legislation implements expansive sanctions on the Russian Federation’s government officials, as well as individuals, financial institutions, and other entities affiliated with or owned by the Putin regime. These sanctions will go into effect if the Russian Federation continues to refuse to engage in good-faith negotiations for a just and lasting peace, or if it launches any further military operations that compromise Ukrainian sovereignty. Additionally, it enacts a bold 500 percent tariff on all imports to the United States from the Russian Federation, as well as from any countries that continue to fund Putin’s war machine by purchasing Russian-origin oil, uranium, or petroleum products. The sanctions package is designed to apply maximum pressure on the Kremlin and any enablers of its imperialist ambitions—underscoring that peace cannot be achieved while the Russian Federation continues to bomb Ukraine’s civilian population or while consenting countries continue to bankroll Putin’s regime.

In my statement with the other Co-Chairs, I reiterated that these sanctions are not symbolic—a clear message that when democracies are under siege, the United States will respond—not with hesitation, but with purpose. I look forward to continuing to support Ukraine and democracy around the world.
