Officer Jacob Derbin was just 23 years old.

He had barely been on the force for 10 months. He had his whole life ahead of him—a life devoted to service, to duty, to protecting others.

And on May 11th, 2024,  he gave that life in the line of duty.

Officer Derbin was ambushed while responding to a domestic disturbance call in Euclid, Ohio. A woman had called 9-1-1, terrified of her ex-partner’s threats. Officer Derbin stepped into danger to protect her.

As he searched the backyard, the suspect opened fire.

Officer Derbin was hit. But even in his final moments, he didn’t think of himself. With his last words, he warned his fellow officers of the danger—saving their lives.

That’s the kind of man he was.

Selfless. Brave. A true hero.

We cannot bring Officer Derbin back. But at Back the Badge 911, we do everything we can to support families like his in the painful aftermath.

That’s why we sent a $1,000 donation to help his loved ones through this unimaginable tragedy. We also minted a Challenge Coin to honor his sacrifice—so that his memory, his courage, and his devotion to duty are never forgotten.

But here’s the hard truth:

We know another call is coming.

Somewhere, some officer will respond to a routine call… and it won’t be routine. A family will get that knock on the door. Children will lose a parent. A spouse will be left behind. And a community will mourn.
