Decades of conflict, insecurity, violence, and a lack of essential services has caused one fifth of the Central African Republic’s population to be displaced.

Among those affected, women and girls are the most vulnerable to life-threatening conditions.

With sexual violence, trafficking, and forced marriage rising at alarming rates in the Central African Republic, UNFPA-funded safe spaces and clinics provide a crucial lifeline for women and girls like Noami.

In Mboko Landja, Naomi was only seven when she stopped receiving an education. By the age of thirteen, she was forced into marriage, and with no source of help after her husband abandoned her and both of her parents passed away, a nearby UNFPA safe space offered her a second chance.

“I dream of becoming a seamstress so I can support my children and prepare them for adulthood,” she told us. “I want to leave here with valuable skills. Before, I wasn’t educated, but thanks to this space, everything has transformed.”

But lifesaving funds from the United States that supported these services have been terminated. Nearly 70,000 women and girls will be impacted by the lack of available funds.

Already, two UNFPA-supported health clinics have been forced to close their doors and thousands are no longer receiving vital assistance — including safe delivery and medical care for survivors of rape.
