This week felt like a turning point. Democracy won in court in Pennsylvania, at the ballot box in Wisconsin and in a 25-hour speech on the floor of the U.S. Senate. Today, hundreds of thousands of Americans will peacefully protest across the country.
It has been a difficult time for all of us and even as the news is better, it is still not good. Just yesterday, a North Carolina appeals court paved the way to potentially disenfranchise tens of thousands of voters. Trump’s attacks on fundamental rights continue. He is now damaging our economy with nonsensical tariffs.
Personally, I’ve been subjected to a barrage of personal and professional attacks from Trump, his administration, and his political supporters. Many of you have reached out in solidarity and with concern for my well-being. Others have asked whether I will give up.
Since November I have said that my commitment to democracy is as strong today as it was when I worked for Hillary Clinton’s campaign in 2016. I remain as determined to fight for free and fair elections now as when I helped lead the effort to defeat Trump in court more than 60 times following the 2020 election.
Sadly, many of the loudest voices for democracy during Joe Biden’s presidency have now gone quiet. Some who once stood beside me when it was easy to oppose authoritarianism have stepped back since Trump took office.
I would be lying if I said I don’t worry. I do. But as I wrote last month: “Despite that worry, I cannot stop standing up for what is right. I cannot turn a blind eye to injustice.”
I started Democracy Docket in 2020 because democracy was under attack from Trump. At the time, that attack took the form of voter suppression and what became known as the Big Lie. From the beginning, I made it clear that Democracy Docket would never back down, never bend the knee, and never make a deal.
We built Democracy Docket without using Substack because we never wanted any other company to control our platform or ability to speak directly with you. We did not seek outside investors because we wanted to ensure we would be fearless, independent and free from outside influence.
We grew then — as we grow now — thanks to the support of our readers, viewers, subscribers and members. We continue to expand our coverage to serve you, our audience, and no one else.
Since Trump took office, we’ve made his attacks on democracy a core part of our coverage. Last week, we launched a new newsletter dedicated to providing smart, in-depth analysis of Trump’s actions and how the courts are holding him accountable. Authored by Jacob Knutson, The Opposition is sent each Thursday to Democracy Docket’s premium members ([link removed]) . I believe you’ll find it to be an invaluable resource for understanding the times we’re living in.
Over the last three months, we have continued to expand our free and premium offerings. If you haven’t upgraded yet, I hope we’ll give you a reason to ([link removed]) .
