John — Michigan has been cutting funding for school libraries and librarians for years. When I taught high school in Detroit, our school didn't even have a library. But we know school libraries and librarians are good for literacy rates. As I told the Free Press a few days ago, "Schools that have librarians and libraries have better reading scores than schools that do not. There is no clearer data than that.” That's why I'm backing three bills that would require every school to have a library and a librarian. But I need your help to keep fighting for our kids. Some folks in Lansing don't want to pass these pro-student bills. Will you chip in $10 today to help me help our kids?
Ninety-two percent of our schools don't have a librarian. Since 2000, the number of school librarians in Michigan dropped 73 percent. We now rank 47th in the country for librarians per students. But still there's opposition to my library bills.
We know access to libraries and librarians increases literacy rates and improves outcomes for our kids. Thank you for helping me fight for them. Fighting Forward,
