Refugee families at risk. Help bridge the funding gap.

Dear John,

I am writing to you today with an urgent plea for help. As you may already know, a devastating earthquake has struck Myanmar on 28 March, leaving a trail of destruction and immense suffering in its wake. The images and stories from the ground are heartbreaking. Families have lost their homes, their loved ones, and everything they hold dear.

The people of Myanmar are in desperate need of our collective support.

UNHCR is on the ground, working tirelessly to deliver critical aid. We are providing emergency shelter and relief items like blankets and mosquito nets to those who have been affected.

But the needs are overwhelming, and we urgently need your help to scale up our response.

“The earthquake struck an area already hosting the largest number of displaced people in the country, so the needs are vast”, said Noriko Takagi, UNHCR’s Representative to Myanmar. Watch Noriko's full video report below.

On March 28, a powerful 7.7 magnitude earthquake struck central Myanmar, causing significant damage. The epicenter was located about 16 km north-north-west of Sagaing City, and 19 km North-West of Mandalay city. An aftershock of 6.4 magnitude at a depth of 10 km occurred in the same area. The earthquake was felt as far as Thailand, India, Bangladesh and China and, in Myanmar, and caused significant damages, destroying homes and civilian infrastructures. UNHCR is on the ground with other UN Agencies and humanitarian partners, supporting the response and coordination efforts to address the most urgent needs of those affected by the earthquake and its aftermath.

In the spirit of compassion and solidarity, values shared across communities in Asia, I appeal to your generosity. Your contribution will make a life-saving difference. It will help us provide immediate relief and support long-term recovery efforts.

  • $40 can provide an emergency shelter kit to those affected by the earthquake, helping them to maintain their shelter.
  • $136 can provide a large, 4x50-metre cover sheet to an earthquake-affected household, offering better protection and space for families to have a sense of security in times of emergency.
  • $280 can provide 20 solar lamps to a disaster-affected family in Myanmar to provide light to their shelter.

Please, stand with the people of Myanmar in their time of greatest need. Your support will bring hope and critical assistance to families struggling to survive.

Thank you for your compassion and support.

Sincerely,

Monia Hassan
