Hello,
Night after night, peaceful protestors in every state in the Nation have taken to the streets. They're angry, sad, tired, and desperate for change.
The pain that so many are feeling right now is not new. For too long, too many of our leaders have turned a blind eye to injustice and to the murders of Black Americans like George Floyd and Breonna Taylor.
To those of you who demand change, I want you to know that I see you. I hear you. And I stand with you, side-by-side, in our shared work to make our Commonwealth and our country more just and equal for all.
Unfortunately, our President has chosen a different path. Earlier this week in Washington, President Donald Trump deployed tear gas, rubber bullets, and military personnel against peaceful protestors just so he could hold a photo op. There's no excuse.
We cannot allow President Trump's response, nor the demonstrations themselves, to overshadow the necessary call for justice. We can, and we must, reform our systems and hold those accountable who abuse them. I urge all of you who protest in the days ahead to be peaceful and to keep each other safe.
I also encourage you to support the work of groups like the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund that do important racial justice work on a national scale through litigation, education and advocacy. Organizations in your own community are also doing this critical work and I encourage you to seek them out and support them however you can.
