Dear Reader,

Every time you read, share or support our work, you become part of something bigger — a mission to shine a light on injustice and hold power to account. Because of your actions, we’ve been able to pursue the toughest stories, challenge those in power and spur real change where it matters most.

ProPublica’s 2024 annual report shows the power of nonprofit investigative journalism. I invite you to take a look at the full report <[link removed]> to see how an independent, verifiable account of what’s happening can inspire impact at every scale — in state and federal policies, and in people’s daily lives. A few examples:

Confronting housing insecurity and rising rents nationwide, the Department of Justice and eight states sued a maker of rent-setting software <[link removed]>, as well as six of the nation’s largest landlords <[link removed]>, following our investigation into how the software’s algorithm boosts profits <[link removed]>. The lawsuit asserted that the software facilitated illegal price-fixing, reduced competition among landlords and resulted in higher rents.

More child support payments are flowing directly to children after at least six states have rewritten their laws and policies <[link removed]> since we reported that $1.7 billion of that money was being redirected into state coffers <[link removed]> annually.

And lawmakers in at least seven states <[link removed]> are seeking expanded abortion access, including some bills that were filed in direct response to ProPublica’s reporting that repeatedly uncovered the heartbreaking realities of restrictive abortion laws <[link removed]>, breaking story after story that laid bare their life-threatening consequences.

In 2024, ProPublica’s reporting also dug deep into the systemic inequalities, policy failures and deceptive practices that pervade America’s health care system. And, as this annual report shows, many of our stories spurred action, with regulators introducing reforms and lawmakers taking steps to address the injustices we exposed.

These stories are more than headlines — they are catalysts for change, made possible by your belief in our mission. At ProPublica, we chronicle abuses of power and betrayals of public trust in enormous detail because we believe that people, armed with the facts, will confront injustice and try to make things better. Your support enables us to continue uncovering the stories that need to be told, no matter whom they upset, for a more informed and just society.

Thank you for being an integral part of our work and impact. I look forward to continuing this vital work together.

With gratitude,

Robin SparkmanPresident, ProPublica
