First Oakland County Mumps Case of the Year: Health Officials Emphasize Vaccination
*Pontiac, Mich. April 4, 2025* – The Oakland County Health Division has its first mumps case this year– the first reported case in Oakland County since 2022 and the ninth in Michigan in 2025. There were no close contacts or exposures identified in this case of an adult resident, but it serves as a vital reminder of the importance of vaccination, especially considering recent measles cases in the state.
“This case of mumps, coming just weeks after Oakland County’s first measles case of the year, underscores the essential role of vaccination in protecting our communities,” said Kate Guzmán, Oakland County health officer. “The MMR vaccine remains our best defense against measles, mumps and rubella, offering highly effective protection against these serious diseases and helping to prevent outbreaks.”
Mumps is a contagious viral infection that affects the salivary glands. It spreads through direct contact with saliva or respiratory droplets from the mouth, nose or throat. Symptoms of mumps typically appear 16 to 18 days after exposure to the virus and may include:
* Fever
* Headache
* Muscle aches or pain
* Loss of appetite
* Fatigue
* Swelling on one or both sides of the face (chipmunk cheeks)
* Jaw pain or swelling
* Pain or tenderness around the swelling
While most people with mumps recover within two weeks, serious complications can occur, including hearing loss and inflammation of the testicles, ovaries, breast tissue, pancreas, brain and tissue covering the brain and spinal cord. There is no treatment for mumps - only management of symptoms – making vaccination the best form of protection.
The Measles, Mumps, and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is a safe and highly effective, two-dose series that provides long-term protection. Children should receive their first dose 12-15 months and a second dose at 4 - 6 years old, or at least four weeks after the first dose. If you do not have a record of two MMR vaccines, unsure if you have been vaccinated, or unsure if you have had mumps in the past, contact your health care provider.
The MMR vaccine is available through Oakland County Health Division offices, some health care providers and pharmacies. Health Division offices are located at the following addresses:
* *North Oakland Health Center* - 1200 N. Telegraph Road, Building 34 East, Pontiac
