The Trump administration is criminalizing freedom of speech and political
dissent right before our eyes.
First, Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University graduate and legal permanent
resident of the United States was arrested and transported to an ICE
detention center in Louisiana not for breaking any laws, but for his
political activism on campus.
The Trump administration says they are revoking his green card and
deporting him, but so far, federal judges have temporarily blocked this
from happening.
Then, federal agents similarly kidnapped Tufts University PhD student
Rumeysa Ozturk off the streets and transported her to an ICE detention
center states away last week. Secretary of State Marco Rubio once again
admitted this student did not commit a crime, but the administration is
revoking her visa and the visas of hundreds of other international
students anyway.
[ [link removed] ]NBC News headline: "Trump takes aim at foreign-born college students,
with 300 visas revoked". Subhead: "Some students have been picked up off
the street by immigration agents and held in detention centers, sometimes
a thousand miles away from their homes, with little warning".
This should alarm all of us,
John. Donald Trump and his far-right
administration are openly jailing and threatening to deport people for
exercising their freedom of speech and right to protest. This
authoritarian action opens the door for them to do the same with any one
of us for opposing their right-wing agenda.
We cannot allow this administration to punish people for simply having
different political views and peacefully protesting — that opens the door
to fascism.
